TEN Arquitectos | Taller de Enrique Norten Arquitectos
Since its founding in 1986 in Mexico City by Enrique Norten (FAIA), TEN Arquitectos (Taller de Enrique Norten) has created a diverse portfolio of work from our offices in Mexico City, New York and Miami; for typologies such as master plans, infrastructure, cultural, education, hospitality and residential; and for scales from urban planning to architecture buildings to design objects.
Our work strives to connect people to people, people to place, and to provide a platform for social interaction. Our projects have been extensively recognized for their community building, their social commitment, their contextual sensitivity, and their environmental responsibility. Placed in the intersection of the global and the local, the universal and the specific; TEN Arquitectos is known for both its contribution to the global contemporary architectural discourse and for recognizing and celebrating the unique, site-specific conditions of each project.
Each project presents very special opportunities, thus making each project unique. Our work is rooted in the comprehensive research of the complexity created by the various superimposed layers of information that define a project; the physical, social and cultural conditions of each specific site and program.
Throughout 35 years of practice, TEN Arquitectos has developed a contemporary design vocabulary based on our knowledge of the tectonics of our discipline, our acquired experience gained through our built work, and our interest in the most current technologies of representation and construction; along with the lessons learned from the historic and cultural wisdom of the places and the people where we have and had the opportunity to interact with and contribute to their built environment.
Our work strives to integrate, connect, and weave each project with its immediate context, recognizing and enhancing the different orders established by the existing landscapes -whether urban or natural- in which each one is immersed. Our work follows the absolute belief that architecture must be responsible to its environment, respectful and amenable to its cultural and social conditions, as well as aware and responsive to its economic and political unique parameters.
We are dedicated to the creation of order, form, and space. We are interested in the functionality and the beauty of our work at all scales- but most importantly, we are committed to the people, both the individuals and communities, that inhabit and activate our projects.
Our comprehensive approach has allowed us to work globally and gain international acclaim, including multi-awarded projects. TEN Arquitectos is currently designing projects in the Caribbean, the United States and Mexico. Our process-driven approach has resulted in countless awards, both nationally and internationally, receiving recognition from a multitude of sources which include: Premio Mies van der Rohe de Arquitectura Latinoamericana, state and national AIA Design Awards, Architectural Record, Architect Magazine, Architizer, biennials in México, Argentina, Ecuador; the Royal Institute of British Architects, among others.
Enrique Norten has been honored for his extensive experience and professional excellence, such as The World Cultural Council “Leonardo da Vinci” World Award of the Arts in 2005; the Smithsonian Latino Center Legacy Awards in 2007, the (legacy) “Trayectorias 2014” by the Colegio de Arquitectos de la Ciudad de México; the Richard J. Neutra Medal for Professional Excellence in 2015; in 2018 the Fine Arts Gold Medal by the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico.
